Ownership of results

Who owns CFD results? What solver and cloud terms say

Updated

A CFD or FEA result is a file you made with someone else's software, so the first question is whose it is. These are the answers the 8 vendors on our board give in their own words.

Ask about my simulation archive

Most vendors leave the results with the customer

7 of the 8 vendors write that the customer keeps ownership. Ansys says the customer retains all ownership interest in customer content and results, and SimScale says ownership of designs, analyses, simulations and other results stays with the customer.

Luminary Cloud draws a finer line: the customer owns its geometries, solver data and the simulation results, while synthetic data the platform generates from them belongs to Luminary.

Where ownership is not the whole answer

3 vendors reserve aggregated or anonymised use. Rescale may use usage data to improve its platform and will not disclose it unless it is de-identified, so the results stay yours while records about how you ran them may not.

The rest of the board is at how long a simulation cloud keeps your data.

Describe the simulation archive you hold

7 of the 8 simulation vendors we read leave the results with the customer, and 3 keep some aggregated use. Tell us which tools hold your runs and we will reply about yours.

The simulation work

What does most of the archive come from?

  • A person reads every simulation enquiry
  • No solver vendor on the board is shown what you send
  • No geometry, mesh or results file is asked for here
